Cycling
Hungary is criss-crossed with 2,000km of cycle paths, and Lake Balaton is a prime spot – indeed you can join a route that takes you right around the outside of the lake. The breathtaking views come thick and fast, and there is always somewhere to unsaddle for a drink, a swim, a meal and a well-earned night’s rest.
There are plenty of places to hire bicycles for very reasonable prices in the main resorts, either from the larger hotels or from dedicated outlets. You might try those at Siófok (Szigliget utca 7), Tihany (Kossuth utca 32) or Balatonfüred (Ady Endre utca 52). Ask at the Tourinform offices for details of the best local routes, and for recommendations of hotels, guesthouses, campsites and restaurants at which to alight along the way. We at the tourist board produce a brochure called Cycling in Hungary that can get you started, while there is comprehensive information on hire and repair shops in Cycling Around Hungary, published by Frigoria. Several tour companies organise cycling holidays, including Ecotours (www.ecotours.hu).
