Eger Wine Region

The wine region around the attractive Baroque town of Eger is often associated with Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood), a robust red wine the Turkish invaders believed to have strength-giving properties akin to Asterix’s magic potion. Wine has been made here for over 1,000 years, and a new breed of winemakers is successfully blending traditional techniques with modern methods to put Eger back on the wine map.
Szépasszony Völgye (The Valley of the Beautiful Women) is a row of around 50 wine cellars hewn into the rock face a short walk from the centre of Eger. Most are open from about 10am to 10pm, so you can work your way along, sampling the wines of small winemakers as you go. Not all the wine is of the highest quality, but you are guaranteed a good time and you may discover a rustic gem or two.
The more discerning drinker will seek out the Eger region’s more prestigious winemakers. Some wineries, such as the Demeter Pincészet, allow you to book tasting sessions online, but in most cases it is advisable to telephone in advance. Alternatively, enquire at the tourist office at Bajcsy Zsilinszky utca 9 (Tel.: +36 36 510 270) or ask your hotel receptionist to call on your behalf.
